Now that the Tennessee Titans have hired Ken Whisenhunt to be their new head coach there is a chance he could request permission to interview Pittsburgh Steelers linebackers coach Keith Butler to be his defensive coordinator. Butler is under contract for 2014, however, so the Steelers have the right to prevent that for happening like they did twice before. Butler, however, might not be the only coach on the Steelers staff that Whisenhunt has his eyes on.
According to a Tuesday morning tweet by Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports, if Whisenhunt isn’t able to land John McNulty to be his offensive coordinator in Tennessee, Steelers running backs coach Kirby Wilson might very well be his next target.
It is unknown if Wilson is currently under contract with the Steelers for 2014, but if he is, the franchise has the right to deny him the chance to interview for the position if they so choose.
While it hasn’t been made official, all signs point to Steelers offensive coordinator Todd Haley keeping his job. If that comes to fruition, then Wilson, who many speculate would succeed Haley if he were to be fired, would have to wait at least another year to move up with the Steelers.
Wilson and Whisenhunt don’t appear to have much of a past together as the former came to Pittsburgh after the latter left to become the head coach of the Arizona Cardinals, so Wilson being named a potential candidate for the Titans offensive coordinator job is a bit strange, but not impossible.
