Colts Release Former Steelers Lineman Trai Essex

Formers Pittsburgh Steelers offensive lineman Trai Essex was released Tuesday by the Indianapolis Colts to make room for a new cornerback.

Essex played in two games with the Colts, who suffered a rash of injuries on their offensive line to start the season.

The former Steelers draft pick saw most of his playing time at right guard and was likely signed because of his familiarity with the offense of Bruce Arians.

Essex was resigned by the Steelers this past offseason, but he did not make the 53 man roster as the team chose to keep rookie seventh round draft pick Kelvin Beachum instead. Beachum saw his first NFL action Sunday in the loss to the Oakland Raiders as right tackle when starter Marcus Gilbert received medical attention for his injured groin.
