Day nine of training camp is in the books now for the Pittsburgh Steelers and tonight Ken Laird the morning host of Sports Talk On Trib Live Radio is my guest on the our special edition podcast. You can follow Ken on Twitter at @Ken_Laird and listen to the show at http://sportstalk.triblive.com
Ken starts off by telling us what head coach Mike Tomlin looked to accomplish on Thursday at Latrobe and that includes installation of the two minute drill for both the offense and the defense. Overall all Ken thought that practice was sloppier than past practices he has observed. We move on to tall about what appears to be a slow start by first round draft pick David DeCastro and why that might be. Like Mark Kaboly, who had on Wednesday evening, Ken thinks there is a good chance that Ramon Foster could be the starting right guard against Denver in week 1. It is still early though as the Steelers have yet to even play their first preseason game.
We move on to get Ken\’s thoughts on the battle for the fifth wide receiver spot on the roster as another day has passed and we have yet to see any one player emerge as a leading candidate. Ken gives us a run down of a few of them. Ken talked to fullback Will Johnson on Wednesday and we discuss his chances of beating out David Johnson for the fullback spot. Make sure you check the Trib Live Podcast page for a replay of that interview. David Paulson is not a name we have discussed too much in these podcast, so we have Ken fill us in on what he has seen out of the Oregon product thus far in camp.
We move on to talk about the cornerback battle between Keenan Lewis, Cortez Allen and Curtis Brown so far in camp. Ken gives us his analysis of the three so far.
We close up the interview talking briefly about a defensive end battle, check in on the punting situation and what Ken has noticed in certain personnel and formation groupings. We also discuss the concerns at the outside linebacker spots due to all of the injured players right now.
We look forward to having Ken on again some time in the near future and thank him for checking in with us on Thursday.
We will continue these mini podcast updates all through training camp and we appreciate all of the great feedback we have gotten on them.
As always, thanks for listening and don\’t forget to call or email with questions or comments and please pass us along to your friends!
