Could The Broncos Be Without DE Elvis Dumervil Week 1 After Aggravated Assault Accusation?

Some big news on Sunday out of Miami as CBS4-TV reports that Denver Broncos defensive end Elvis Dumervil was arrested in Miami Saturday night and accused of aggravated assault with a firearm. The bond for Dumervil was set at $7,500 according to the report.

Dumervil missed the entire 2011 season after suffering a torn pectoral muscle last year in training camp. The injury came on the heels of him signing a $61.5 million contract extension. In 2009 Dumervil led the NFL in with 17 sacks and he followed that season up with 9.5 sacks in 2010.

With the arrest of Dumervil happening so close to the start of the training camp, combined with that there are no extensive details on what may or may not have happened Saturday night in Miami, it is hard to speculate whether or not some sort of suspension might be on the horizon under the league’s personal conduct policy. All it would take though is a one game suspension to start the season for Dumervil to miss the opening Sunday night game against Pittsburgh.

This will be something to certainly keep yopur eyes on over the next several weeks as a Dumervil would be a huge loss for the Broncos on defense.

UPDATE Per Adam Schefter: Elvis Dumervil\’s attorney, Harvey Steinberg, on his client\’s arrest this weekend: “No charges have been filed. No aggravated assault or assault took place. And it is likely that once the full investigation is complete, no charges will be filed against Mr. Dumervil.”
