Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin met the media following their 27-0 win over the St. Louis Rams at Heinz Field. Tomlin said he particularly liked the effort of Trai Essex today as he he played center most of the game after Doug Legursky went down injured. Tomlin says he tips his hat to him. Tomlin said Legursky suffered a shoulder strain and could have went back in if it was necessary. Tomlin said rookie Marcus Gilbert was less than professional in his preparation this week and that was the reason Jonathan Scott started at right tackle. Tomlin said he will see where the week takes them if Gilbert has to win back his job and the preparation and professionalism of Gilbert will play a big part in that discussion. Tomlin said the decision to start Charlie Batch over Ben Roethlisberger was made pretty early in the week, because of the short week. Roethlisberger was emergency only today. Tomlin says a myriad of factors will go into the decision next to play Charlie or Ben. When pressed for what those are, Tomlin said, “Pick one!”
