Season 2, Episode 40 of The Terrible Podcast is up and David Todd and I discuss the Steelers heartbreaking 23-20 Sunday night loss to the Baltimore Ravens at Heinz Field. Working from the end of the game forward, we open with a long discussion of the Steelers decision to punt, up four points with 2:37 left in the game. Mike Tomlin sent out the field goal team, but the Steelers were assessed a delay of game penalty and then elected to punt. What was Tomlin thinking? Was he purposely trying to incur the penalty and ensure the Ravens accepted? Was he uncertain whether to kick or punt? Did he make a good decision? We share our thoughts and then break down the play selection on that drive up to the point, particularly the third-and-five pass to Mewelde Moore that preceded the punt.
We then look at the Ravens last drive when they went 92 yards for the winning score. The Ravens had to convert a fourth-and-one to get it done, but they were able to carve up the Steelers with surprising ease. David and I analyze the Steelers tactics–whether to play press-man coverage or a softer zone, whether to blitz or only rush three, how and where to play the safties when the Ravens made it into Steelers territory. There is a ton to analyze.
In fact, there is so much to cover in this game that David & I only briefly touch on the dominating play of James Harrison, the refereeing, the personal fouls, the decision to defer at the coin toss, the loss of Emmanuel Sanders, Hines Ward and Arnaz Battle and many other things. But we give you a full fifty minutes and we\’ll come back and continue recapping the game during the first half of Wednesday\’s podcast.
