The Steelers drafted running back Baron Batch from the Texas Tech with the 29th pick in the 7th round (232nd overall) of the 2011 NFL draft. Comes out of a spread offense and measures 5 foot 9 5/8 and weighs 207 pounds. Had 40 times of 4.50 and 4.52 seconds in the 40-yard dash, 7.03 in the three-cone drill and 4.32 in the short shuttle at his Pro Day. Also did 24 reps of 225 lbs on the bench press and turned in a 39 inch vertical jump to go along with a 10 foot 6 inch broad jump. He is projected as a 3rd down back at the next level and keeps coming back from adversity. Batch is regarded as a great open field runner with good leverage and great balance and the ability to shed tacklers. He tore his Achilles tendon in 2006 blocking in team drills and needed multiple surgeries and thus was medical redshirted for 2007. In 2009 he missed time with an arm injury and had to leave the team’s last bowl game with a calf injury. Batch has great hands out of the backfield and a very reliable receiver as he catches the ball naturally away from his body and quickly turns up field after the catch.
