Steelers Offensive Line Breakdown Play By Play Versus Browns Week 6

Below is the play by play break down of the offensive line from the Sunday week 6 game versus the Cleveland Browns. It is merely a pass or fail grade on if I think the lineman did his job or not. It also should be noted that we go under assumptions that we know what the assignment on each play was and sometimes it is not obvious. We have to grade on what we see and go from there. We added small notes to each play as well. As always if you disagree with any play, do so respectfully in the comments and give your reason so I can go back through and re-watch your disagreement.

Doug Legursky – Legursky got another start this week with Trai Essex out again with an ankle injury and despite his score played well. He seems to still struggle with some recognition of things and just plain misses his guy or who we think his guy is. The more straight away the blocking scheme is the better he seems to do. He also works well with Maurkice Pouncey in the middle and his pass blocking is definitely better than Essex in my opinion. I think he has clearly taken over the right guard spot for now and expect him to learn from his mistakes still going forward. Make no mistake though, that the Steelers still will likely address this spot in the draft next year.

Flozell Adams – You can call Flozell a right tackle now. He has completed the switch and is playing really well now. He takes plays off and will continue to going forward, but in crunch time he seems up to the task. He will struggle with the athletic speed rushers at times, but he is so big he will dominate those types in the running game. Signing him and moving him to the right side has worked out well thus far.

Maurkice Pouncey – Maurkice was not his dominant self on Sunday, but played well above the line just the same. He is making all the line calls and still learning. I would rank him right now as a top 10 center in the league easily. He is strong and athletic and hopefully will not hit the rookie wall soon. He teams up well with Chris Kemoeatu and Doug Legursky.

Max Starks – Max is back to his old self and the bye week looks like it came at a great time for him as he really no longer seems slowed by his bad ankle. He scored a little low this Sunday and I think on the pass plays he is just getting back accustomed to Ben Roethlisberger trying to extend the play. A couple I graded bad could of gone either way, so do not read too much into his score. He also played every snap Sunday.

Chris Kemoeatu – Kemo left for 3 plays with what looked like a knee problem, but quickly returned and showed no signs of it. Once again he grades out at the top and I dare say is one of the best left guards in the game. He can get to those linebackers at the second level and they can\’t fight him off. He is still quick on pulls to the right as well. Very happy with his play thus far.

Jonathan Scott – Scott filled in for Flozell in the first half for 7 plays and did not look ready to play. Flozell looked to have a stinger and Scott looked cold off the bench and just not mentally ready. I am sure the coaches will fix that, but the drop-off was noticeable when Flozell left.

Ramon Foster – Both Legursky and Kemoeatu were dinged on Sunday and Ramon came in to spell both at different times at both guard positions. he graded out fine while in the game, but was called for a holding call on a big Rashard Mendenhall run. Besides the penalty, he looked like he came ready to play unlike Scott.
