In so many words Thursday, Steelers coach Mike Tomlin named Byron Leftwich the team\’s No. 1 quarterback Thursday following the conclusion of offseason practices. Dennis Dixon will be No. 2 followed by Charlie Batch. Scott Brown speculates that Dixon would have to play lights out during the preseason to unseat Leftwich as the No. 1. That is not impossible mind you, but unprobable.
Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin had glowing words for first-round draft pick Maurkice Pouncey on Thursday saying Pouncey could be a candidate to start at right guard and still a candidate for center as well. Tomlin stated he is very mature for a rookie. Also receiving praise were running backs Isaac Redman and rookie Jonathan Dwyer as well as second-round pick Jason Worilds. Worilds is coming along great at converting from college defensive end to outside linebacker with the Steelers.
The Steelers took the first steps of signing their rookie draft picks on Thursday as both linebacker Thaddeus Gibson and defensive linemen Doug Worthington agreed to three year deals. Both happen to have played together at Ohio State in college as well. When the deals are officially announced, the Steelers will need release two players to keep at the league mandated roster number of 80 players under contract. We will have those players names shortly.
