‘That’s What DK Does Best’: Rodgers Happy To Get Metcalf Involved Early In Win

In the first three weeks of the season, there were more questions than answers regarding the Aaron Rodgers-DK Metcalf connection within the Pittsburgh Steelers’ offense.

Though the two had hooked up for a pair of touchdowns on the season, the target share and the overall production just wasn’t there between the future Hall of Fame quarterback and the high-priced wide receiver.

But coming out of the 24-21 win over the Minnesota Vikings Sunday in Dublin, Ireland, there should be no further questions about the connection.

The two hooked up early and often, and it led to a monster day for Metcalf. He finished with five receptions for 126 yards and one touchdown, which came on a remarkable 80-yard catch and run in which Metcalf clocked 21.17 MPH.

Speaking to the media after the Steelers improved to 3-1, Rodgers said he and Metcalf simply took advantage of what the Brian Flores-led Vikings defense gave them.

“It was just coverage. He had single on the back-shoulder fade, and he had Cover Two, but we had nice play-action and that’s what DK does best [on the touchdown],” Rodgers said, according to video via Steelers.com. “He can really run, and it was nice to get him going early.”

On the second drive of the game, Metcalf hauled in three passes for 42 yards, surpassing the 3/32 stat line he had in Week 3 in New England. He made a great catch on a back-shoulder fade from Rodgers for a 17-yard gain, and then won consistently on quick slants, creating separation easily and generating some run after catch.

Then came the big splash after Rodgers hit Metcalf in stride off play-action. Metcalf broke a tackle right at the catch point and raced down the field for the 80-yard touchdown and a 14-3 Steelers lead.

That’s what Metcalf does best, using his size, speed and strength to run away from defenders. That play right is exactly why the Steelers traded for him for him in March.

Those concerns about getting Metcalf more involved in the Steelers’ offense should quiet over the bye week. He turned in a monster performance and showed he’s the guy the Steelers believed they were acquiring. They just have to build off it now.
