Schrager: Sources From Giants, Steelers Don’t Have Timeline On Aaron Rodgers’ Decision

Aaron Rodgers

The NFL new year begins today, and the Pittsburgh Steelers still don’t have an answer on who their starting quarterback will be for 2025. The team seems to be waiting on a decision from Aaron Rodgers before moving forward, but that decision may not come anytime soon as Rodgers decides between the Steelers, the New York Giants, and potentially the Minnesota Vikings. On Good Morning Football, Peter Schrager said that sources he’s spoken to from the Giants and the Steelers have no idea on a potential timeline for Rodgers to decide.

“Rodgers, we know is going somewhere. And it might not just be a week. It might be two weeks, three weeks, four weeks. If you think you know the answer to what Aaron Rodgers’ timetable is, you know more than the Steelers or the Giants do,” Schrager said. “Because I’ve spoken to sources on both sides, and everyone’s kind of got that shrug emoji. We’re waiting, we’re seeing, giving him his space, let him decide.”

The question for the Steelers, and really any team involved, is just long they can afford to wait. For the Giants, things are slightly easier because they have the No. 3 overall pick in the draft. They could take a quarterback with that pick or look to package it to move up to No. 1 to get Cam Ward, the consensus top quarterback in the draft. The Steelers, selecting at No. 21, don’t have the luxury of being able to pass off their quarterback need until the draft.

The dwindling number of available starters doesn’t help either, as Russell Wilson is the fallback option right now for both the Steelers and the Giants. If the Aaron Rodgers negotiations and decision drags on for weeks, I could see a scenario where the Steelers back out and just turn back to Wilson instead of potentially leaving themselves empty-handed by waiting too long.

NFL insider Ian Rapoport also said on Good Morning Football that a decision could come today, so it seems as if it could really happen at any time. But the longer the Steelers have to wait on a decision, the less likely it feels that Rodgers will ultimately be coming to Pittsburgh and donning the Black and Gold.
