Schefter: Russell Wilson In No ‘Rush’ To Sign, Has ‘Options’ Beyond Pittsburgh

Russell Wilson

Who will be the Pittsburgh Steelers’ quarterback in 2025? That’s one of the biggest questions remaining in free agency. They’re targeting Aaron Rodgers, but that’s anything but a done deal. Russell Wilson is still available, and the Steelers could turn back to him. Wilson might feel spited by not being the Steelers’ first choice, but ESPN insider Adam Schefter pushed back on that narrative. Wednesday

“Russell [Wilson] has options,” Schefter said on Rothman and Ice on 97.1 The Fan. “So, Russell is sifting through what he wants to do. If Aaron Rodgers goes to Pittsburgh or New York, Russell might have more leverage somewhere else.

“So he’s not in any rush to make a decision. People might think, ‘Okay, he’s the second choice, he’s stuck.’ I don’t think it’s quite that way. I think Russell’s got some options in play.”

That might not be what Steelers fans want to hear. It’s already been reported that Rodgers is in no hurry to sign with a team. The longer this gets dragged out, the worse things get for the Steelers. Not having a starting quarterback in place likely slows other moves they want to make. Wilson playing the waiting game isn’t great news.

It seems like Wilson’s market might be a little more robust than it first appeared, too. The New York Giants reportedly have interest in him, but they’re also vying with the Steelers for Rodgers.  The Cleveland Browns reportedly have interest in Wilson too and are hosting him for a visit.

That does seem to give Wilson more options. The Browns could always draft a quarterback — they have the second overall pick this year — but that isn’t guaranteed. They could sign Wilson as insurance. He might choose to go to Cleveland over being the Steelers’ second choice over Rodgers.

It does seem like Wilson doesn’t mind that, though. Perhaps he’ll try to get a better contract out of a team after Rodgers signs. That also wouldn’t be great news for the Steelers, who likely don’t want to spend much on a quarterback. Either way, Pittsburgh seems to be in a bind under center at the moment.

Whatever happens, the Steelers probably don’t want this situation to continue dragging on. This is why they wanted to get a deal done with Wilson or Justin Fields before free agency opened. Now, they’re at the mercy of the market. Rodgers and Wilson could continue to wait, forcing the Steelers to consider other options at quarterback, which are not pretty.
