Kaboly: ‘It Might Be Good’ For Steelers If Aaron Rodgers ‘Comes In And Just Pushes Back On Everything’

Aaron Rodgers

The Pittsburgh Steelers find themselves stuck between a rock and a hard place when it comes to their quarterback situation. We’re now well into the third day since the legal tampering period opened. Multiple teams around have done something to address their own quarterback issues. For Pittsburgh, it’s looking increasingly likely that either Aaron Rodgers or Russell Wilson end up under center in 2025. If it’s Rodgers, he comes with his own baggage, but Steelers insider Mark Kaboly thinks that might be a good thing.

“If he comes in and just pushes back on everything, the way the Steelers have been, it might be good for the organization,” Kaboly said on 93.7 The Fan on Wednesday.

Rodgers is at a turbulent point in his career. Yet, he’s managed to wind up in a situation where he holds most of the leverage. The New York Jets let Rodgers pick and choose a lot of different things during his time there. Although an injury derailed his first season in New York, the second year didn’t go as planned either. Now, he’s a 41-year-old quarterback coming off a recent Achilles injury. And somehow, he’s in a position where he’s essentially holding the Steelers hostage.

Part of the reason for that is Pittsburgh’s way of doing things isn’t working. The Steelers are never bad enough to land a high draft pick, yet they never show any aggressiveness when it comes to upgrading the position, and this offseason is a perfect example of that. They let Justin Fields walk and reportedly never made a real push for Sam Darnold. If their reasoning is they simply prefer Rodgers, fine. Under that logic, you’d assume they’d show some urgency to get a deal done there.

If he does come to Pittsburgh, there are reasons to believe Rodgers can be successful. He’d be behind an offensive line that does have some kinks to work out but also has a lot of potential. With DK Metcalf and George Pickens (for now) at receiver, he’s got talented options to get the ball to. The Steelers will have to address the running back position but that will likely come in the draft.

If Rodgers is their guy, the Steelers are going to go through this whole process again in a year or two anyways. For now, they might not have any other option than to persuade Rodgers, and all that comes with him, to come to Pittsburgh.
