Insider: Giants And Steelers Competing To Sign QB Aaron Rodgers

Aaron Rodgers Steelers Giants

It’s a two-team race for veteran quarterback Aaron Rodgers. The Pittsburgh Steelers and New York Giants are reportedly competing to sign him. While he’s the Giants’ top target, beat writer Connor Hughes hears Rodgers is most likely to wind up with the Steelers.

“Aaron Rodgers is the quarterback the Giants want,” Hughes tweeted Monday afternoon. “They’re waiting to find out if he wants them. Most league sources I touch base with believe Rodgers is headed to Steelers, which would lead the Giants to Russell Wilson. The problem: The Titans, and others, are interested in Wilson, too.”

Hughes was the first to report the Tennessee Titans’ interest in Wilson, potentially leaving the Giants out in the cold without a quarterback. Pittsburgh’s options have shrunk with Justin Fields headed to the New York Jets and Sam Darnold predictably landing with the Seattle Seahawks.

It leaves Russell Wilson and Rodgers as the two most likely names to be the Steelers’ 2025 starting quarterback. Given that Wilson hasn’t re-signed with Pittsburgh despite clearly wanting to return, it places Rodgers as Pittsburgh’s first choice.

Choosing Pittsburgh over New York makes the most amount of sense. It’s a more stable organization with a head coach Rodgers respects. Despite their playoff-win drought, playing for the Steelers also gives Rodgers the best chance to win. Pittsburgh has made the postseason in four of the last five seasons. New York has done so just once since 2017. At 41, 2025 is likely Rodgers’ final NFL season and he’d prefer to go out on a higher note than the disaster that was the 2024 season with the New York Jets.

No contract is done until it’s done and Pittsburgh remains without a starting quarterback under contract. The only one signed is Skylar Thompson, inked to a Reserve/Future deal shortly after their season ended. But in a race between Pittsburgh and New York, the Steelers clearly have the edge even if Rodgers is potentially the team’s third option on its quarterback shopping list.
