Former Pittsburgh Steelers QB Josh Dobbs has reportedly agreed to terms on another contract to extend his NFL career. This time, he will be heading to the New England Patriots on a two-year contract worth $8 million, according to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.
This will be the ninth team he has been under contract with in the NFL as he enters his ninth season.
Originally drafted by the Steelers in the fourth round of the 2017 NFL Draft, Dobbs was the backup in Pittsburgh from 2017 to 2021, with a brief stint on the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2019 to break up his time in Pittsburgh.
He was always a favorite teammate of Ben Roethlisberger, who leaned on him for on-field help during game day breaking down defenses on the sideline. Dobbs, who studied aerospace engineering (rocket science) at the University of Tennessee, is a highly intelligent individual. That has served him well in the NFL and is likely one of the big reasons he has been able to make a nine-year career out of it.
Dobbs has started 15 games over the years with a 3-12 record as the starter. In total, he has completed 344 passes on 549 attempts (62.7 completion percentage) for 3,281 yards and 17 TDs to 15 INTs. That included the 2023 season, in which he started eight games for the Arizona Cardinals and four games for the Minnesota Vikings.
Most recently, Dobbs was the backup for the San Francisco 49ers. He started one game and appeared in two last season. He lost his only start but completed 32 of his 47 attempts for 361 yards, two TDS, and two INTS.
Not many players make it nine years in the NFL, and Dobbs now has a contract that would get him across the 10-year mark.
