Last year, Russell Wilson had a long visit with the Pittsburgh Steelers late in the week leading up to free agency and then announced that he agreed to terms on Sunday evening. With Aaron Rodgers having a lengthy meeting with the Steelers on Friday, I figured there was a good chance that an announcement could be coming this evening.
There’s no announcement as of yet, but we do have an interesting report passed along by Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio instead.
“The ‘when’ remains to be seen. The ‘if’ is slowly becoming more clear,” Florio wrote. “As one source in the general vicinity of those who would be in position to know said Sunday, it’s a ‘safe bet’ that quarterback Aaron Rodgers eventually will sign with the Steelers.”
Ever since free agency began and the initial quarterback market shook itself out, Rodgers eventually coming to Pittsburgh seemed like the logical choice. The Minnesota Vikings briefly added some suspense to the situation as they were reportedly weighing Rodgers as an option. But once they bowed out, it became evident that Pittsburgh would be the likely choice. That is especially the case now that the New York Giants have signed Jameis Winston.
The meeting between Rodgers and the Steelers was “positive” according to reports and lasted about six hours. The meeting was more to gauge fit and culture than to talk numbers. They have had parameters of a deal worked out for multiple weeks now with everything coming down to Rodgers’ slow decision-making process.
This is pure speculation based on Rodgers’ pattern of drawing out these decisions and making the most of the publicity, but Florio suggested that the announcement could potentially come during Pat McAfee’s Big Night AHT in Pittsburgh on April 9th at PPG Paints Arena. Rodgers has been a part of the McAfee show on Tuesday afternoons for a couple years now.
If this report is to be believed, Rodgers will be the next quarterback of the Pittsburgh Steelers.
