Albert Breer Gives Steelers ‘Slight Edge’ To Land Aaron Rodgers, But Giants Still Have ‘Really Good Chance’

Aaron Rodgers Steelers Giants

The Pittsburgh Steelers still don’t know who their quarterback will be for 2025, and right now, it seems as if the team is putting its eggs in the basket of Aaron Rodgers coming to Pittsburgh. While there aren’t many quarterback-needy teams left, the New York Giants are also after Rodgers, and Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated said on The Rich Eisen Show that it’s a close race between the Giants and the Steelers.

“I know the Steelers felt pretty optimistic yesterday that they’d be the choice. The Giants have continued to make a push there,” Breer said.

Breer said that Rodgers is “private” about his feelings but that both the Giants and the Steelers still have a good chance to land Rodgers.

“If I had to guess right now, I might say the Steelers have a slight edge because it’s the more ready-made situation. You’re guessing less about what’s gonna happen there. But the Giants have their hat in the ring and have a really good chance at it too.”

A decision could come as soon as today, but it sounds as if the Steelers might need to come up with a strong Plan B if Rodgers signs with the Giants. NFL Media’s Mike Garafolo reported earlier today that the Giants are having “great conversations” with Rodgers, and Breer’s reporting makes it sound as if staying in New York and switching conferences is a legitimate outcome to how his free agency ends.

If Rodgers does sign elsewhere, the best remaining free agent would be Russell Wilson, and a reunion with Wilson looks like it could be in the cards if things fall through with Rodgers. Right now, it seems as if the team prefers to sign Rodgers, so talks with Wilson likely wouldn’t pick up unless Rodgers signs elsewhere or negotiations continue to drag on.

With Daniel Jones and Sam Darnold off the market, as well as top backup options like Josh Dobbs and Zach Wilson, the quarterback market is drying up, and the Steelers can’t afford to be left empty-handed if things take too long.

In Pittsburgh, Rodgers would be joining a team that made the playoffs last year and added another top receiver in DK Metcalf to pair with George Pickens. It’s an attractive situation, but the Giants also have a really talented receiver in Malik Nabers and have made some big moves in free agency to shore up the defensive side of the ball, signing Jevon Holland and Paulson Adebo while also bringing back WR Darius Slayton.

While the Steelers might offer a better chance to win right now, Rodgers could very well opt stay in New York and look to turn around a Giants franchise that’s struggled recently and has the No. 3 pick in the 2025 NFL Draft.

Ideally, a decision comes sooner rather than later so the Steelers can have their quarterback situation for 2025 figured out, but the longer this drags on, it feels like the chances of Aaron Rodgers coming to Pittsburgh decrease.
