With starting tight end Pat Freiermuth on Injured Reserve for the next month, the Pittsburgh Steelers are continuing to make sure their Rolodex at the position is up to date.
According to a Tuesday morning report from NFL Insider Aaron Wilson, the Steelers are set to host tight end Scotty Washington for a workout Tuesday.
Washington, an undrafted free agent out of Wake Forest following the 2020 NFL Draft, previously spent time with the New England Patriots and Cincinnati Bengals.
While at Wake Forest, Washington was primarily a wide receiver. Checking in at 6-5, 225 pounds in college, Washington finished his career with the Demon Deacons with 110 receptions for 1,676 yards and 13 touchdowns.
The former NFLPA Bowl participant switched to tight end after landing with the Patriots and bulking up to 247 pounds.
Washington has played one NFL game, that coming in 2022 with the Patriots, in which he played 22 snaps offensively in a 22-18 loss to the Bengals on Dec. 24, 2022. He landed on the Practice Squad/Injured Reserve last season after his elevation to play against the Bengals.
Washington was targeted on a 3rd-and-29 Hail Mary in the game against the Patriots and tipped the ball to WR Jakobi Meyers for a touchdown, using his big frame to box out the defender to make the play.
He was a big-play threat in college as a receiver, averaging 15 yards per catch for Wake Forest. While he hasn’t had much of an opportunity in the NFL, his size is intriguing as a pass-catching weapon. Though Patriots’ head coach Bill Belichick stated during the summer ahead of training camp that the team really didn’t know what Washington’s position was overall, it was clear that New England wanted him on the field.
Ultimately, Washington was waived prior to final roster cuts and has been looking for work since. That could come in Pittsburgh.
The Steelers have Connor Heyward, Darnell Washington and Rodney Williams on the 53-man roster at the tight end position with Freiermuth on IR. Noah Gindorff remains the lone tight end on the practice squad.
