The Pittsburgh Steelers have officially placed QB Ben Roethlisberger on injured reserve in a move that will end his season following the news of his impending elbow surgery. In a corresponding move, the team has promoted QB Devlin Hodges from the practice squad to the 53 man roster.
Rudolph will start this Sunday at San Francisco and for the remainder of the regular season. Hodges has come a long ways in a short amount of time. Initially just a tryout player in rookie minicamp, he earned a contract, excelled in camp, but was cut outright at the end of the preseason. The team re-signed him to the practice squad after trading Josh Dobbs to Jacksonville last week. For now at least, he’s the backup quarterback.
Currently, the Steelers have just two QBs on the roster so it’s possible they add a third, be it on the 53 man roster or at the least, to round out the practice squad.
More roster moves could be coming in the next 48 hours given the injuries suffered in Sunday’s loss. Local media reports indicate OLB Anthony Chickillo remains in a walking boot after suffering a foot injury which may keep him out a considerable amount of time.
