The initial snap counts from the Pittsburgh Steelers Sunday night preseason win against the Tennessee Titans are now in and they are listed below along with a few observations from each position group. As usual, we will verify the counts during our weekly play charting.
Offensive linemen: Rookie guard Fred Johnson (39) got a lot of burn once again Sunday night after the first team played their 20-22 snaps. The second-team unit left to right Sunday night was Zach Banner (29), Derwin Gray (37), B.J. Finney (9), Johnson and Chukwuma Okorafor (37).
Wide receivers: Rookie Diontae Johnson (0) sat out Sunday night. Ryan Switzer (20), Donte Moncrief (20) and Johnny Holton (20) led the team in offensive snaps played Sunday night and not too much stuck out otherwise.
Running backs: James Conner (15) started and looked fine and he was relieved by Jaylen Samuels (19) and then by and Trey Edmunds (11). Benny Snell Jr. (0) sat the game out with an injury. Roosevelt Nix (0) only played on special teams.
Tight ends: Christian Scotland-Williamson (0) failed to play once again due to an injury and rookie Zach Gentry (12) only saw limited work after both Vance McDonald (21) and Xavier Grimble (20) were done for the game. Kevin Rader (21) and Trevor Wood (5) also both saw action.
Quarterbacks: Fourth-stringer Devlin Hodges (0) failed to see playing time Sunday night as Joshua Dobbs (23) payed the entire second half. Starter Ben Roethlisberger (20) was followed by Mason Rudolph (14).
Defensive linemen: Starters Cameron Heyward (23) and Stephon Tuitt (12) both got their work in in the first half as did Javon Hargrave (21). Tyson Alualu (19) and rookie draft pick Isaiah Buggs (23) both got some middle-game snaps in as did Henry Mondeaux (15) and Daniel McCullers (14). Nothing stick out about the rotation that was used Sunday night.
Inside linebackers: Rookie first-round pick Devin Bush (19) started after sitting out the team’s second preseason game. Vince Williams (10) saw his first action of the preseason Sunday night as well. Mark Barron (22), Tyler Matakevich (20) and Ulysees Gilbert III (26) all saw time earlier in the game.
Outside linebackers: Olasunkanmi Adeniyi (0) sat out again as expected and Sutton Smith (55) finally saw his first preseason action. T.J. Watt (20) and Bud Dupree (10) both started and the latter left early with a thumb injury. Anthony Chickillo (0) sat out injured Sunday night and Tuzar Skipper (29) played extensively before giving way to newcomer Jayrone Elliott (16).
Cornerbacks: Starting Saturday night were Steven Nelson (29) and Artie Burns (29) on the outside with Mike Hilton (6) in the slot. Justin Layne (36) saw some extended playing time after Burns exited. Brian Allen (0) did not play and Cameron Sutton (20) saw a decent amount of playing time and Trevon Mathis (30) quietly saw late action again.
Safeties: Kameron Kelly (41) saw early playing time and also relieved Sean Davis (25) after he suffered his ankle injury. Terrell Edmunds (29) got quality work in as did Marcus Allen (37) after the starters were done. Jordan Dangerfield (10) played limited defensive snaps but played extensively on special teams.
Special teams: Skipper failed to play any special team snaps Sunday night and has played just 3 in three preseason games. Gilbert, on the other hand, played 13 special teams snaps against the Titans while Nix, Matakevich and Dangerfield led the way with 15 each. Rookies Smith and Layne also logged 15 special teams snaps.
