The initial snap counts from the Pittsburgh Steelers Friday night preseason opening win against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are now in and they are listed below along with a few observations from each position group. We will verify the counts during our weekly play charting.
Offensive linemen: Rookie guard Fred Johnson (59) and tackle Zach Banner (59) both got a lot of burn Friday night and on the surface, both played reasonable well. These two are on course to make the 53-man roster this year along with the other 7 expected ones.
Wide receivers: Rookie Diontae Johnson did not play Friday night. The top three snap-getters at the wide receiver position against the Buccaneers were Tevin Jones (44), Diontae Spencer (28) and Trey Griffey (27). One of the offensive starts Friday night, James Washington (23) played well in the first half.
Running backs: Rookie Benny Snell Jr. (33), as expected, led his position group in total snaps played and he also played 14 more snaps on special teams. Trey Edmunds (19) was a distant second i playing time behind Snell.
Tight ends: Christian Scotland-Williamson (5) likely would have played more Friday night had he not suffered a groin injury early on. Rookie draft pick Zach Gentry (19) seemingly made the most of his debut snaps and also played a few on special teams.
Quarterbacks: Fourth-stringer Devlin Hodges (28) not only got to play Friday night, he logged a lot of playing time to boot. The rotation against the Buccaneers went as advertised with Joshua Dobbs (21) being followed by Mason Rudolph (16) and then Hodges.
Defensive linemen: Lavon Hooks (31) and rookie draft pick Isaiah Buggs (31) led the way in total snaps with Henry Mondeaux (28) not too far behind them. Starter Javon Hargrave (18) surprisingly played some against the Buccaneers.
Inside linebackers: Rookie first-round pick Devin Bush (40) played the entire first half and played well in the process. Also playing well was the team’s other drafted inside linebacker this year, Ulysees Gilbert III (46). Starter Mark Barron (27) even logged some playing time Friday night with those snaps coming beside Bush.
Outside linebackers: JT Jones (68) and Olasunkanmi Adeniyi (49) were the top two snap getters on the outside Friday night and the latter even played some on the left side to boot. Adeniyi also played 14 snaps on special teams Friday night and was visible in that phase f the game as well. Tuzar Skipper (46) looked like he played above-the-line in his playing time as well.
Cornerbacks: Rookie draft pick Justin Layne (64) played a lot Friday night and he needed to. 16 special teams snaps on top of his defensive snaps kept him real busy. His defensive snaps came on the left side. Trevon Mathis, who was just signed a few days ago, also played a ton against the Buccaneers.
Safeties: Kameron Kelly (39) not only started the game at free safety, he played into te third quarter Friday night. Second-year safety Marcus Allen (30) didn’t get into the game until the second half
