The Pittsburgh Steelers have now wrapped up their Wednesday training camp practice and several players sat out the session at Saint Vincent College in Latrobe. That list of players includes center Maurkice Pouncey (back?), guard David DeCastro (soreness), cornerback Joe Haden (foot or ankle?), inside linebacker Vince Williams (hamstring), tight end Christian Scotland-Williamson (soft tissue), inside linebacker Devin Bush (undisclosed) and tight end Zach Gentry (undisclosed). After practice ended, Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin talked some about the players who are currently dealing with injuries.
“Had a couple of guys that are still out at a day-to-day-like capacity,” Tomlin said. “You’ll probably see Pouncey some tomorrow in some capacity. Scotland Williamson has got a soft tissue [injury]. Vince Williams is getting close, DeCastro day-to-day. Haden day-to-day. A couple of young guys got evaluated today, we’ll get the results of that and give you further information. Guys like Devin Bush and Zach Gentry were evaluated and we’ll have further information on some of those tomorrow.”
Tomlin did not reveal what kind of injuries that both Bush and Gentry are currently dealing with so we’ll have to wait and see if he gives more information on those two rookies during his Thursday morning press conference.
It also sounds like rookie outside linebacker Sutton Smith (undisclosed) failed to practice on Wednesday and Tomlin would only indicate that he is falling behind because of the time that he’s missed so far during training camp. Steelers backup center B.J. Finney also left Wednesday’s practice early and Tomlin was asked about his status after practice ended.
“He was taken off and is being evaluated for heat-related-like symptoms,” Tomlin said. “You know, August football-like things.”
The Steelers will wrap up their 2019 training camp practices on Thursday and their next preseason game is Saturday night at Heinz Field against the Kansas City Chiefs. Tomlin talked about the importance of that game to some players after Wednesdays practice was over with.
“We’ll start working on some of those type things relative to Kansas City,” Tomlin said about the forthcoming Thursday camp practice. “Got a number of guys that are working their tails off to get back in the fray and it’s important because time is getting tight. Guys working their way back into action, whether they’re partial participants or full participants. I think that’s really positive. We’ll take the same approach this week as we took last week in terms of being inclusive and leaving the light on for guys and giving them every opportunity to make an accounting of themselves in stadium on Saturday night.”
