The Pittsburgh Steelers will resume their training camp practices on Tuesday following a few days off to mourn the sudden passing of wide receivers coach Darryl Drake and head coach Mike Tomlin announced during a morning press conference that a few players aren’t likely to work in today’s session at Saint Vincent College in Latrobe.
“We’ll continue to address injury situations the way that we always do in training camp style,” Tomlin said Tuesday morning. “You know we got a lot of guys working their way back on the grass today. I think the only guys I anticipate maybe not participating are Joe Haden and [Maurkice] Pouncey. Christian [Scotland-Williamson] has got a soft tissue injury sustained in-game. Maybe [David] DeCastro, who’s got a little training camp-like soreness. I think a lot of the guys that have missed time will at least be working in a partial capacity today, or at least that’s the information that I have as I sit here.”
Tomlin was asked specifically about cornerback Joe Haden, who was carted off the practice field last week with what was initially reported as being either an ankle or foot injury of some kind.
“It’s a contusion,” Tomlin said.
For whatever it’s worth, Haden tweeted last week that he will be fine some 24 hours after suffering his injury.
Center Maurkice Pouncey has been sidelined since the team’s Sunday night practice at Heinz Field and many believe he’s dealing with a back strain of some kind. Tomlin, however, wouldn’t reveal what is ailing the center.
“I don’t get into the details. He’s day to day, man, he’ll be back out probably sooner rather than later,” Tomlin said of Pouncey’s current status.
To hear Tomlin talk on Tuesday, it sounds like several players who sat out Friday’s preseason game with minor injuries will be able to work in some sort of capacity on Tuesday. That long list of players includes wide receiver Donte Moncrief (finger), wide receiver Diontae Johnson (groin), safety Sean Davis (finger), cornerback Artie Burns (groin), cornerback Brian Allen (undisclosed), outside linebacker Sutton Smith (undisclosed), outside linebacker Bud Dupree (undisclosed), and inside linebacker Vince Williams (hamstring), just to name a few.
Once Tuesdays training camp practice gets underway we should get a pretty good idea from Alex Kozora as to which players won’t be practicing.
