UConn safety Obi Melifonwu is scheduled to make an official, pre-draft visit with the Pittsburgh Steelers, according to a report by the Houston Chronicle’s Aaron Wilson.
A date for his visit was not known in Wilson’s report. Melifonwu blew up the Combine with one of its best workouts. Standing in at 6’4 224 pounds, he ran a 4.4, jumped 44 inches in the vert and 11’9″ in the broad. He recorded 118 tackles and picked off four passes last season for the Huskies.
Projected to be a late first round pick, it’s no surprise to see the Steelers have interest in him. He would fit what the team is looking for in a hybrid safety, initially at least, especially after the loss of Lawrence Timmons.
The Steelers are allowed up to 30 pre-draft visits. Historically, there usually wind up drafting 2-4 players from that list.
