The 2016 season is unfortunately over, and the Pittsburgh Steelers are now embarking upon their latest offseason journey, heading back to the UPMC Rooney Sports Complex, formerly known and still referred to as the ‘South Side’ facility of Heinz Field. While the postseason is now behind us, there is plenty left to discuss.
And there are plenty of questions left unanswered as well. The offseason is just really the beginning phase of the answer-seeking process, which is lasts all the way through the Super Bowl for teams fortunate enough to reach that far.
You can rest assured that we have the questions, and we will be monitoring the developments in the offseason as they develop, and beyond, looking for the answers as we look to evaluate the makeup of the Steelers as they try to navigate their way back to the Super Bowl, after reaching the AFC Championship game last season for the first time in more than half a decade.
Question: What players or positions are you most looking forward to seeing perform during the 2017 NFL Scouting Combine?
The 2017 NFL Scouting Combine already started getting underway yesterday in Indianapolis, and we have already heard quite a bit from people such as Mike Mayock, particularly on his takes on many of the high-profile players in this draft, as well as on the overall quality of depth that we see at each position entering this next phase of the draft process.
It won’t be long now before the drills actually get underway and we can actually get a look at how many of these college stars perform on an athletic level in a relatively neutral environment. While it can certainly be readily argued that too much is frequently made of Combine performances, I would maintain that it more than retains its relevance, and usefulness.
The Steelers are entering this draft process with no clear obvious hole in the starting lineup, at least for the 2017 season, assuming free agency works out as many anticipate, although they may have depth issues here and there.
Yet there are still certain positions generally listed more than others as areas of need. Edge rusher is on the top of virtually everybody’s list, although there are those who still believe that another cornerback must be added with a premium selection. There is also a not insignificant number of people who believe the tight end or wide receiver positions need to be addressed.
These are probably the position groups that the bulk of Steelers fans are probably going to be focusing their attention on—although some may be eying a future quarterback as well—but what are some of the specific players that you are curious to see in terms of what kind of Combine numbers they put up?
