During his end-of-the-season press conference, Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin wouldn’t commit to the team’s entire coaching remaining intact during the offseason. During a Wednesday morning interview on DVE Radio, Steelers team president Art Rooney II was asked if the coaching staff evaluation is still ongoing.
“Yeah, a couple weeks after the season, Mike [Tomlin], first he meets with all of the players and kind of has an exit interview with all of them and has a similar kind of conversation with the coaches and so he’s going through that process,” Rooney said. “We do have contract situations with coaches that we’ve got to work through, so it’s a process that is happening as we speak.”
Rooney was then asked if linebackers coach Joey Porter is currently being evaluated on his coaching at this point, or if he’s breaching into a different area based on what happened after the AFC Wild Card game against the Miami Dolphins
“That was an unfortunate incident, obviously, and we expect more from Joey and I’m sure that will be part of the conversation that he has with Coach [Tomlin],” Rooney said.
Rooney did not elaborate on which of the Steelers coaches are currently scheduled to have their contracts renewed, but with that said, defensive coordinator Keith Butler and Porter might very well be two of what could be several up for renewal as both have been in their current positions for the last two seasons.
Regardless of which coaches may or may not be up for contract renewals, one would think that some decisions will be made very soon as to which ones won’t be back.
