I guess we’re shaping up into an NFL roundup to kick off the weekend. The Miami Dolphins have signed DE Jason Jones, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.
This news comes just hours after the Baltimore Ravens signed cornerback Jerraud Powers. While any interest in Powers was merely speculative, it was legitimate with Jones. The Pittsburgh Steelers brought him in for a visit in mid-March but obviously, Jones did not sign. The team wound up signing Ricardo Mathews two weeks later.
Jones has started 65 career games, spending time with the Tennessee Titans, Seattle Seahawks, and Detroit Lions in his career. Over that time, he’s recorded 28 sacks, including 4.5 last season.
Pittsburgh seems likely to roll with Mathews as the top five tech backup behind Cam Heyward and Stephon Tuitt, though drafting Javon Hargrave gives them top depth in nickel and dime packages. L.T. Walton, Caushaud Lyons are carry overs from last year’s roster who will compete for possibly one more backup gig. Newcomers Giorgio Newberry and Johnny Maxey will make a push, too.
At the least, these signings should serve as a reminder that while the bulk of free agency is over, there is still plenty of talent available and the Steelers could make another move before training camp.
