The news didn’t sound good when fullback Roosevelt Nix was carted off with a foot injury Sunday. Those fears have been confirmed as Nix will miss the rest of the season according to Ray Fittipaldo of The Pittsburgh Post Gazette.
Tomlin referred to it as any injury to his fifth metatarsal after yesterday’s game.
Nix had become a fan-favorite, including mine, for his throwback physicality as a fullback and special teams ace. Brought into camp as a longshot, he routinely made positive plays on special teams, highlighted by his punt block in the final preseason game against the Carolina Panthers.
He finishes the year with two receptions for 16 yards and nine total tackles on special teams. Will Johnson will serve as the fullback for the remainder of the season.
We haven’t found the exact play Nix was injured on but look for it later in the week. Once the Steelers officially place him on injured reserve, they will make a corresponding move to fill his spot on the 53 man roster. It’s unclear who that candidate will be but whoever it is, they will likely be inactive on gameday. Nix’s injury opens up an active roster spot for a player like Anthony Chickillo, who has been inactive the last several weeks, to fill his role on special teams.
