As expected, the Pittsburgh Steelers made a roster move on Saturday and it included Tyler Murphy being promoted from the practice squad to the 53 man roster. To make room for Murphy on the roster, cornerback Cortez Allen was placed on the Reserve/Injured list.
Murphy will now dress on Sunday against the Kansas City Chiefs and serve as the backup to Landry Jones, who will be making his first career start. This also now means that you can expect Ben Roethlisberger (knee/questionable) to be inactive on Sunday along with backup Mike Vick (hamstring/out).
Murphy was originally signed by the Steelers this year as an undrafted free agent out of Boston College where he was 131-of-230 passing for 1,623 yards with 13 touchdowns and 10 interceptions in 2014. He also rushed 181 times for 1,184 yards and 11 touchdowns last season.
During the preseason, Murphy played very few snaps at quarterback as most of his playing time was spent at the wide receiver position. He didn’t attempt a single pass during the preseason and rushed just twice for two yards in addition to catching 8 passes for 90 yards and a touchdown.
As for Allen, he hasn’t played since the first week of the season because of a knee injury. The former fourth round draft out of the Citadel also missed most of the 2014 season due to injuries. He signed a big contract extension prior to the start of the 2014 regular season.
