If things go as expected this week, we’ll have another new contract to look at that will better prepare us for the one that Pittsburgh Steelers defensive end Cameron Heyward should be signing later on in the summer.
According to Michael Gehlken of The San Diego Union-Tribune, San Diego Chargers defensive end Corey Liuget is expected to sign a five-year extension sometime this week that should average a little more than $10 million a season.
Liuget, who was drafted by the Chargers in the first round of the 2011 NFL Draft out of Illinois, has recorded 18 sacks and 169 total tackles during his first four seasons in the league.
Last week, the New Orleans Saints signed defensive end Cameron Jordan to a five-year, $55 million contract extension and that deal will likely serve as a template for the ones that both Liuget and Heyward will ultimately be signing.
As soon as Liuget’s deal is finalized and the numbers are reported to the NFLPA, we’ll pass them on to you.
