When the Pittsburgh Steelers signed free agent punter Zoltan Mesko on Monday it now means that kicker Shaun Suisham will once again have a new holder. Due to the change coming this late, head coach Mike Tomlin was asked Tuesday during his Tuesday press conference if he’s worried that it might take some time for the two to get used to one another.
“I’m not overly concerned about it,” said Tomlin. “Shaun Suisham in not a high maintenance kicker from that standpoint. I think he’s already had three holders in the short period of time that he’s been here due to instability at our punting position. So we’re going to work at it this week, obviously we’re going to give this due diligence, but not something that’s overly worrisome. Mesko is a professional and that’s one of the reasons we acquired him.”
Mesko held for kicker Stephen Gostkowski during his time with the New England Patriots and Tomlin pointed to how consistent that duo was together for the last several years.
Kickers and punters are indeed different animals, but they are paid to deal with circumstances such as this one. Mesko and Suisham will have plenty of time to work with long snapper Greg Warren over the course of the remainder of the week, so like Tomlin, I cant see this being an issue right now.
