Happy Holidays from The Terrible Podcast! We hope your Christmas was great and 2012 brings you health and happiness. The Steelers brought their fans some happiness with a 27-0 shellacking of the St. Louis Rams at Heinz Field on Christmas Eve. In Episode 61 of Season 2, David Todd and I review the Steelers win on Saturday and a whole lot more.
With few injuries other than the shoulder strain to Doug Legursky to report, we open the show with a look at the Week 17 schedule and the flex time changes the NFL instituted to keep the competitive landscape as even as possible this coming week. Both the Steelers/Browns and Ravens/Bengals games will now kick off at 4:15. We review the scenarios that could lead to the Steelers finishing as the #1, #2, or #5 seed in the AFC. We then get into the medical topic of the month and discuss whether or not Ben Roethlisberger should play on Sunday and under what conditions.
Finally we get to Saturday\’s recap. The Rams game seemed to be one of the least-anticipated games that David and I can remember in the last 5-7 years. Fortunately the Steelers justified the fans\’ malaise by keeping any possible drama in check as they were able to put this one away early in the second half. As always there was still plenty to talk about and we discuss the positives: 1.) the run game 2.) offensive line play 3.) the game management of Charlie Batch 4.) play calling. And the negatives 1.) run defense 2.) third down conversions 3.) slipping all over the field.
Interspersed in that we talk about the continued special season of Antonio Brown, the play of Trai Essex at center, a new wrinkle in the run game, the big moment of John Clay and much more.
We close with another long discussion about Hines Ward and the difficult calls the NFL is making about hits to the head and what needs to be done.
