Phil Stukenborg of the Memphis Commercial Appeal is reporting tonight that Steelers quarterback coach Randy Fichtner might be interested in the vacant Memphis Tigers head coaching job. Stukenborg reports that this is according to several former associates and colleagues.
Fichtner has been on the Steelers coaching staff for the the past five seasons and has been the quarterback coach since 2010 as he was promoted from the wide receivers coach position when Ken Anderson retired. He has ties to Memphis after coaching there as a graduate assistant from 1990–1993 and was the Tigers offensive coordinator from 2001–2006. Stukenborg goes on to say that the offenses that Fichtner ran in 2003 and 2004 averaged 30.2 and 35.8 points, respectively and those were the only two seasons that Memphis surpassed 30 or more points in the past 41 years.
Fichtner is also regarded as a great recruiter and recruited Panthers running back DeAngelo Williams to play for Memphis when he coached there.
