The news is filtering out this morning that rookie second round draft pick Marcus Gilbert will be the new right tackle now that it appears that Willie Colon will likely be lost for the season with a triceps injury. Gilbert is the right choice here as he played some right tackle during the preseason and fared pretty good at the position.
The Steelers reportedly reached out to Flozell Adams, but no deal is imminent at this time. Adams likely commands a large salary that the Steelers just can not swallow from a salary cap aspect and let\’s not forget he is yet another year older and has not taken a snap since the Super Bowl loss.
Many think that Jonathan Scott should be flipped to the right side, but Scott just is not an effective run blocker and the Steelers are a right handed running team predominantly. The same goes for Ramon Foster. Second year lineman Chris Scott struggled at both right guard and right tackle in preseason and is in no way an option.
There have been some crazy suggestions since the Colon injury came to light with the craziest being that center Maurkice Pouncey should play right tackle. That is pretty ludicrous as you do not take your most athletic interior lineman and waste him at right tackle.
With Colon likely going to injured reserve, the Steelers might consider activating Trevis Turner off the practice squad to take the roster spot of Colon. they also may consider a much lower grade journeyman tackle as well for the minimum, if they can find one.
Mike Tomlin will update the situation shortly during his Tuesday press conference.
