As promised I am keeping up with the TOX stats this year and below are the week 1 results. A quick refresher first though. The TOX stat tracks explosive plays and turnovers and it is derived by first finding the differential of explosive plays of 20 yards made and allowed on offense and defense. The second part of the equation is to find the difference of turnovers made versus turnovers created. Your basic take-away, give-away stat. The final step in determining the TOX is to take the differential of the two numbers. Pretty basic stat, but very telling as to the success of a team not only game by game, but by season.
The Steelers led the NFL last year with a TOX stat of +59. This year did not get off to a great start as the Steelers had a -9 TOX stat against the Ravens. They are currently ranked last in the league right now heading into week 2.
The magic number in a game by game look at the stat is usually +2 or better as far as winning a game and 11 teams had a +2 or better TOX stat in week 1 and those teams went 10-1 combined with the Saints being the lone team to lose with a +2 or better TOX stat. Teams with a +1 TOX stat went 2-2 on the week.
I will be posting a week by week look at this stat going forward along with cumulative totals and it certainly is a stat worth tracking.
