The Pittsburgh Steelers have invited Notre Dame CB/RET Max Hurleman to participate in their rookie minicamp next weekend. It will be on a tryout basis. The Fighting Irish’s Twitter/X account shared the news a short time ago.
An athlete who played multiple positions in college, Hurleman spent most of his career at FCS Colgate where he played running back and wide receiver. Transferring to Notre Dame for 2024 as a grad student, he was listed as a corner and the team’s starting punt returner.
In 2024, he recorded 13 tackles and had one fumble recovery, falling on a loose ball in a win over Virginia. Hurleman also had 23 punt returns for 138 yards, an average of six yards per try.
At his Pro Day, he weighed in at 5107, 200 pounds. Hurleman ran a 4.68 40-yard dash with a 36-inch vertical, 9’11” broad and 6.96 three-cone. He also put up 13 reps on the bench press.
Beginning his college career as a running back, Hurleman carried the ball 194 times for more than 800 yards and one touchdown while at Colgate. Switching to wide receiver for 2023, he caught 28 passes for 273 yards and two scores. He also returned kicks and punts there with a career long 41-yard kick return and a 26-yard run back.
A Pennsylvania native from Wyomissing in Berks County, he was a star high school player who ran for over 1,500 yards, scored 18 total times, and tallied 70 tackles as a high school senior while serving as team captain. His high school squad won a district championship.
Hurleman is the second known rookie minicamp invite, joining Pitt EDGE Nate Matlack. The Steelers figure to invite roughly two dozen players to try out at their three-day rookie minicamp next weekend and will release their minicamp roster shortly before it. While longshots, it’s been common for at least one tryout player to earn a contract and become part of the Steelers’ offseason 90-man roster (which technically can be 91 due to EDGE Julius Welschof’s international exemption).
