Report: Steelers Invite Pitt EDGE Nate Matlack To Rookie Minicamp

Nate Matlack

The Pittsburgh Steelers have extended a rookie minicamp offer to Pitt EDGE Nate Matlack, per Joseph Potts, the founder of TopSpeed Performance Center. Potts said Matlack told him that he was invited to the Steelers and Chiefs rookie minicamps.

It’s unknown whether Matlack accepted the invite to either minicamp.

A transfer from Kansas State, Matlack had a career-high five sacks for Pitt last season to go along with 22 total tackles, eight of which were for a loss. He also had three passes defensed and a forced fumble. He measures in at 6045 and 254 pounds.

Nate Matlack was a three-star prospect and the No. 671 overall prospect in the 247Sports composite rankings in the Class of 2020. The Olathe, Kansas native chose Kansas State over Air Force, Illinois State, Boise State and Kansas. He was ranked as a three-star transfer by 247 ahead of last season.

Matlack finished his collegiate career with 14.5 sacks in four seasons. Alex Kozora listed him as a potential undrafted free agent the Steelers could have interest in. While the Steelers announced their initial crop of seven undrafted free agents, Matlack would have a chance to work his way onto the roster if accepts Pittsburgh’s minicamp invite and plays well.

The Steelers drafted EDGE Jack Sawyer in the fourth round of the draft, and the team also has T.J. Watt, Alex Highsmith, Nick Herbig and Jeremiah Moon on the roster, as well as Eku Leota and Julius Welschof on reserve-future contracts. It’s a deep position in Pittsburgh, but Matlack has impressive athleticism with a 9.62 relative athletic score that includes an impressive 36.5″ vertical and 2.74 20-yard split.

Given that Matlack played at Pitt, who shares a facility with the Steelers, it makes sense that the team would have interest in bringing in Matlack to minicamp. If he does accept the invite, he’ll reunite with former Kansas State team QB Will Howard, who the Steelers selected in the sixth round.

Plenty more rookie minicamp invites and acceptances will start rolling in for the Steelers in the coming days, and it’ll be an exciting weekend with a lot of players working to realize their NBA dream.
