Mike Tomlin Understands ‘Angst’ Of Fan Base With QB Need, Feels Good About Steelers’ Plan

Mike Tomlin Steelers QB

Update: The Steelers selected Ohio State QB Will Howard Saturday in the sixth round of the draft.

Through the first five rounds of the 2025 NFL Draft, the Pittsburgh Steelers have yet to draft a quarterback, including passing on Colorado star Shedeur Sanders three different times.

They don’t have an answer from 41-year-old quarterback Aaron Rodgers, either. But Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin feels good about their plan at the position, even if he understands the fan and media “angst” about the position.

“We’ve had good conversations. We feel good about our plan at the position,” Tomlin said Saturday on the NFL Network, according to video via NFL Network. “Certainly, it’s yet to be revealed at this point, and I understand the angst not only [the media], but this community that supports us.

“We’re excited about what potentially awaits us there. But really I have nothing to add other than that.”

Tomlin wouldn’t give an answer on Rodgers, and understandably so. He left that up to team owner Art Rooney II to talk about, which he did on Friday night, stating that he believes Rodgers may give the Steelers word soon on his decision.

As for the rest of the Steelers’ plan at quarterback, it has yet to reveal itself as they Steelers haven’t picked a quarterback. Ohio State’s Will Howard or Texas’ Quinn Ewers remain on the board, which could make a great deal of sense as the team did work on both quarterbacks.

But right now, Mason Rudolph and Skylar Thompson are the only two quarterbacks on the Steelers’ roster. It’s led to plenty of backlash and criticism, which Tomlin acknowledges and understands.

He’s excited about what potentially awaits the Steelers at the position though, so some patience is required. We’ll see what transpires, but right now there is no answer at the most important position in sports. Hopefully that changes soon.
