Steelers Take Toolsy Linebacker In First Round Of CBS Sports’ Mock Draft

Jalon Walker Scouting Report

With the 21st overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, the Pittsburgh Steelers could do a lot of different things. While there are a few needs around the roster in general, the Steelers might opt to take the best player available in their eyes rather than drafting to fill a specific need. That’s exactly what Tom Fornelli at CBS Sports has Pittsburgh doing in his latest mock draft published on Friday. Fornelli chose Georgia EDGE/LB Jalon Walker to head to the Steelers at the 21st pick.

“Perhaps not the most pressing need in Pittsburgh, but a tremendous value pick,” Fornelli wrote. “There are mixed reviews on what Jalon Walker will be at the NFL level, but few question his athleticism and traits. Could the next great Steelers pass-rusher fall into their laps?”

Walker is one of the more interesting players in the draft. He’s got a ton of talent, but some scouts are divided on which position will suit him best in the NFL.

Jalon Walker does a lot of things well as a pass-rusher. He’s quick, shows good bend around the edge, and is strong at the point of attack against offensive linemen. Defending the run, he shows an ability to take and shed blocks well. He has all the physical tools to be a great edge rusher in the NFL. At this point, it’s just about putting it all together.

That said, Walker doesn’t have much experience on the edge. He’s spent most of his time at Georgia playing linebacker, which some think will be a better fit for him in the NFL. Here, he’s solid against the run with his ability to shed blocks. Walker does well in pass coverage, too. He’s fast and athletic, which allows him to keep up with tight ends and running backs coming out of the backfield. Walker also shows good discipline in zone coverage.

For a more complete look at his game, our own Efram Geller wrote up a scouting report.

There’s a chance Walker could be great as either an edge rusher or linebacker, and he could play a little bit of both in the NFL.

For the Steelers, one question remains: Is Jalon Walker their biggest need? If Pittsburgh views him high enough, it might not matter. But the defensive line could certainly use some added depth. It’s not the only position on the roster in a similar situation. We’re still a month and some change away from the draft, though, and a lot can change in that time. With that in mind, Walker could be an exciting player to keep an eye on come April.
