TAPE BREAKDOWN
Sai’vion Jones has been Louisiana born-and-bred and stayed local by committing to the LSU Tigers out of high school. He worked his way up the ranks and into the starting lineup. A former four-star recruit, Jones became a full-time starter in 2023 and has started 29 games total during his time in Baton Rouge, racking up 16 tackles for loss, 11.5 sacks and three forced fumbles the past three seasons.
When you pop in the tape on Jones, you see a big, long defensive end who plays with a fair amount of burst and power. He displays a quick get-off on the snap and can hunt the quarterback down as you can see in the clip below against USC, dipping and ripping around the corner to get into the pocket and finishing at the quarterback for the sack.
Jones has a motor that runs hot on nearly every play. He plays with a sense of urgency in his pursuit of the quarterback or ball carrier. Watch the clip below of Jones rounding in the pocket as the quarterback attempts to escape, hunting him down from behind and finishing at the passer for the takedown.
Jones is aware of pocket depth and works hard to get the edge as a pass rusher, as you can see in the clip below against the Rebels. He gets his hands on the left tackle and rips hard through the blocker’s inside shoulder to get into the pocket and hit QB Jaxson Dart as the checks the ball down in the flat.
During the Senior Bowl, Jones played some snaps inside for teams looking to see if he could kick inside as a 3/4 defensive end at the next level. He has the height and length for the position, but would need to put on extra weight. Jones represented himself well, having some stellar reps during practice and in the game where he displayed his quickness and hand usage to clear blocks and make plays in the backfield.
Jones has long arms and heavy hands and does a good job setting the edge as a run defender. He can expose his chest and have a hard time fighting off blocks when he doesn’t win the block right away, but he’s strong and sturdy when taking on blockers. In this clip below against Ole Miss, Jones long-arms the right tackle to extend him and keep him off his frame, clearing a path for the linebacker to fly in and make the stop.
CONCLUSION
Sai’vion Jones is an intriguing case study as a 4-3 defensive end who looks like he can play a similar role in the league, having the ability to play in a standup position and with his hand in the dirt. He has the measurables you want in a 3-4 defensive end outside of needing to put on another 10 pounds, but his cleanest fit would be to remain as more of a run-stuffing edge. That is, unless a team like the Steelers were committed to bulking him up and kicking him inside.
When coming up with a pro comp for Jones, Denico Autry comes to mind as another tweener-like player who has bounced around the league, He initially started his career with the Raiders as an undrafted free agent, but has become a productive starter/rotational player who can play inside and outside with similar measurables to Jones coming out of college.
