Steelers Invite Texas Tech Track And Field Star Gabe Oladipo To Rookie Minicamp

Add another name to the Pittsburgh Steelers’ rookie minicamp tryout list. As tweeted out by the school Friday, Texas Tech DL Gabe Oladipo has been invited to the Steelers’ camp next weekend on a tryout basis.

A super-senior, Oladipo has a very interesting profile. A star discus player, Oladipo has never recorded snaps on the football field. He began his track and field career at Texas A&M before transferring to Texas Tech in 2020.

He finished third in the NCAA Weight Throw at this year’s Indoor Championships, and, according to his bio, can bench press 440 pounds with a squat lift of 875 pounds. He is regarded as a star discus thrower who holds many of the school’s track and field records. He was named an All-American in 2022. In high school, he won a 2017 Juniors event in discus.

Oladipo joined the Red Raiders’ football team in the preseason this past year but did not play throughout the year. It’s worth noting he did play football in high school. On the Texas Tech website, he is listed at 6’2, 295 pounds. He participated in the team’s March Pro Day and put up 29 reps on the bench press.

He seems to be a raw and moldable player the team will take a look at during its three-day rookie minicamp, which runs May 12th through the 14th. A very interesting story to highlight during Mother’s Day weekend.
