Steelers Reportedly Restructure Minkah Fitzpatrick’s Contract, Free Up Cap Space

Following the signings of Patrick Peterson, Nate Herbig, Damontae Kazee, Larry Ogunjobi and Cole Holcomb, the Pittsburgh Steelers needed to free up some cap space.

According to Jason Fitzgerald from OverTheCap.com, the Steelers restructured the contract of star safety Minkah Fitzpatrick Thursday morning, freeing up roughly $10 million in salary cap space.

According to previous reporting from Steelers Depot’s own Dave Bryan, a restructure for Fitzpatrick would free up $10,065,000 in 2023 salary cap space.

Fitzpatrick previously signed his four-year contract extension with a new money average of $18.4 million per year in June 2022, of which $36 million was guaranteed at signing. The three-time All-Pro selection was set to earn $14.5 million in base salary this season, carrying an $18 million cap charge.

We’ll see what the full details of the restructure look like, but the $10-plus million the Steelers were able to free up was likely done to fit some of the previous signings under the salary cap for the 2023 season.

Pittsburgh can still restructure outside linebacker T.J. Watt’s deal, too. That would free up more than $12 million in cap space before the start of the 2023 season.
