Contextualization Of WR Denzel Mims’ 2019 Pass Targets At Baylor

Baylor wide receiver Denzel Mims is a player you’ve probably already heard and read a little bit about so far this offseason thanks to our very own Alex Kozora. Mims is participating at this week’s 2020 Senior Bowl in Mobile, AL as well and that will give Alex an opportunity to fully breakdown his game even further than he already has. In light of the buzz that Alex has already given Mims ahead of this year’s Senior Bowl, I thought this Monday would be a great time to contextualize all of the Baylor product’s 2019 pass targets.

In total, Mims was credited with 66 receptions for 1,020 yards and 12 touchdowns during the 2019 season. Those receptions came on approximately 112 total targets. Fortunately I was able to locate all but seven of Mims’ 2019 targets as the Baylor game against Kansas cannot be located at the time of this post. The 105 Mims targets I was able to find have all been contextualized in the table below in the order that they happened in for all to view.

The contextualized targets below include data such as down and distance, opponent, pass distance and yards gained after the catch. Each target that was found and contextualized has been linked to the video for all to see.

Of the 62 found receptions that Mims registered this past season, the average distance of the pass was a robust 13.1 yards. In case you’re curious, the average intended air distance of the 105 found targets that Mims had in 2019 was right at 15 yards. Mims also registered an average yards gained after the catch of 2.9 yards on the 62 receptions of his I was able to contextualize.

As Alex noted in his recent breakdown on Mims, the wide receiver does an excellent job of catching passes way above his head and well outside of his frame. You’ll see several instances of those traits in the plays linked to below. Mims also showed this past season that he has tremendous body control while adjusting to passes in the air that might not be 100 percent on target. He often times plucks the football out of the air with both hands away from his body. His footwork along the sidelines is also very good.

While Mims likely isn’t regarded as a burner, he did do a great job this past season at gaining separation down the field. He probably would have had a few more deep pass receptions had his quarterback not overthrown him a few times. Mims caught passes on all portions of the field this past season and that includes quire a few in the middle between the hash marks. He routinely lined up on both sides of the formation as well.

While Mims had several instances last season of making the tough catches look easy, he also made a few routine targets look hard and thus had nearly a dozen drops. While his 59 percent catch rate on the 105 total targets contextualized might seem low, probably 10 percent of those incompleted passes were uncatchable throws.

Finally, Mims uses his hands and arms well not only off the line, but down the field as well. Alex projects Mims to be drafted somewhere between late on day-one and early in day-two. It will now be interesting to see how Mims fares at the Senior Bowl this week and how he performs at the scouting combine in more than a month from now. In the meantime, Mims 2019 contextualized targets in this post should give everyone a good idea as to wide kind of wide receiver Mims is.
