Steelers Vs. 49ers: Player Snap Counts And Analysis – Week 3

The initial snap counts from the Pittsburgh Steelers Sunday road game loss against the San Francisco 49ers are now in and they are listed below along with a few observations from each position group. We will verify the counts during our weekly play charting.

Offensive linemen: Nothing unusual with the Steelers offensive line in Week 3 outside of tackle Zach Banner (0) not being used as an extra lineman tight end like he was last week on 13 plays.

Wide receivers: Veteran Donte Moncrief (0) was inactive on Sunday and Ryan Switzer (0) failed to play an offensive snap. Those decisions resulted in all of the playing time going to JuJu Smith-Schuster (53), James Washington (49) and rookie Diontae Johnson (42). Johnny Holton (5) also saw very limited playing time once again.

Running backs: James Conner (36) had the lion’s share of snaps and that’s not shocking. While Jaylen Samuels (14) was on the field for more than a dozen snaps, he never touched the football. Rookie Benny Snell Jr. (3) only played a few snaps once again.

Tight ends: Vance McDonald (15) left the game early with a shoulder injury and never returned. Xavier Grimble (38) saw his snaps increase with McDonald sidelined and rookie Zach Gentry (10), who dressed for the first time Sunday, also saw some playing time after McDonald left.

Quarterbacks: As expected, Mason Rudolph (53) played the entire game.

Defensive linemen: Cameron Heyward (56) led the way with Stephon Tuitt (52) not too far behind. Javon Hargrave (46) saw the field 58% of all plays and Tyson Alualu (35) was mixed in quite a bot against the 49ers. Daniel McCullers (20) also saw a good amount of playing time against the 49ers.

Inside linebackers: Vince Williams (0) was inactive with a hamstring injury and so rookie first-round pick Devin Bush (79) and Mark Barron (79) had to play every defensive snap against the 49ers.

Outside linebackers: Bud Dupree (75) and T.J. Watt (72) both started and played most of the game once again with Anthony Chickillo (0) inactive with a foot injury. Olasunkanmi Adeniyi (11) did see the field a little bit morte this week with Chickillo out.

Cornerbacks: Joe Haden (78) played all but one snap Sunday as he was dinged up briefly. Steven Nelson (79) played every snap against the 49ers and Mike Hilton (17) and Cameron Sutton (11) both saw sub package playing time.

Safeties: New safety Minkah Fitzpatrick (79) played every defensive snap Sunday along with fellow safety Terrell Edmunds (79). Backup safeties Kameron Kelly (0) and Jordan Dangerfield (0) were relegated to special teams duty only.
