Report: QB Joshua Dobbs To Start Steelers’ Preseason Finale Against Panthers

The Pittsburgh Steelers will close out their 2019 preseason Thursday night on the road against the Carolina Panthers and while starting quarterback Ben Roethlisberger will sit out that contest, it appears as though the team’s other three quarterbacks will play.

According to several media reports on Tuesday, Steelers quarterback Mason Rudolph has informed everyone that fellow quarterback Joshua Dobbs will start Thursday night against the Panthers. Dobbs is expected to be relieved by Rudolph. The Steelers other backup quarterback on the roster, Devlin Hodges, is expected to play Thursday night in the second half. Hodges did not play any in the Steelers third preseason game this past Sunday night.

For whatever it’s worth, Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin would not reveal what the quarterback rotation would be Thursday night when he talked to the media after the team’s Tuesday practice. The Steelers are expected to travel to Charlotte, North Carolina on Wednesday.

Through the team’s first three preseason games of 2019, Dobbs has completed 15 of his 28 total pass attempts for 259 yards with no touchdowns and two interceptions. Rudolph, on the other hand, has completed 21 of his 32 total pass attempts in the team’s first three preseason games for 243 yards with three touchdowns and one interception. Hodges, who saw action late in the Steelers first two preseason games, has completed 10 of his 18 total pass attempts so far for 117 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions. In Hodges, defense, most of his incompleted passes to date should have been caught.
