Washington CB Byron Murphy Picked For Steelers In NFL Network’s 2019 Mock Draft Live

The NFL Network held their annual ‘Mock Draft Live’ show Sunday night that included 8 of their analysts alternating first-round picks. Picking for the Pittsburgh Steelers at No. 20 overall was Dave Dameshek and he selected Washington cornerback Byron Murphy.

Dameshek seemingly begrudgingly selected Murphy for the Steelers after floating out the idea that Florida State EDGE Brian Burns could be the selection. Burns ultimately didn’t get selected in the first-round of the live mock draft.

After selecting Murphy for the Steelers, Dameshek pointed to the problems the organization has had when it comes to developing that particular position over the years through the draft.

“I don’t love this pick here, of course Kevin Colbert doesn’t have a knack for picking cornerbacks in the first round, but he’s going to try and break that spell here,” Dameshek said. “Byron Murphy, playmaker cornerback.”

Charles Davis then gave his thoughts on Dameshek’s selection of Murphy for the Steelers.

“Byron Murphy makes a lot of sense for them in terms of what they do defensively,” Davis said. “I think he’s got the best instincts of any corner in this draft. And we saw him at the combine where he’d added 14 pounds and competed. Think about all the guys who pumped up their weights, weighed in and went home, because they weren’t ready to carry that weight. He carried it, went through the drills, ran well, looked fluid. So, I think it’s a nice pick for you.”

While Colbert didn’t seemingly make to the Washington pro day this year, Murphy was brought in for a pre-draft visit.
