Study: What The Steelers Look For In Drafting Outside Linebackers

For the fourth year, we’re looking at the Pittsburgh Steelers draft history to determine who the best fits are for the current draft class. Using the measurables of the players they’ve drafted, we can attempt to predict who they’ll be most interested in for 2019. And also who they might not be interested in selecting.

An imperfect, inexact science of course but another piece of the puzzle we can add. Each year, we update it based on the selections made in the previous draft.

Before we start, some of the caveats I like to mention up front. For any timed event, 40 yard dash or shuttle time, I go only off Combine data. Pro Day numbers can be all over the place; the time announced often is different than what an individual organization clocks and we know these numbers are notoriously favorable to the players. For events with more clear-cut measurables, the bench, broad, and vertical, we’ll use the best number of the Combine or Pro Day.

With the Steelers failing to draft an edge rusher last year, our criteria remains unchanged.

6’1+ (10 of 10)
240+ (9 of 10)
Arm Length: 32 1/2 (10 of 10)
4.75 better (6 of 7)
1.65 ten split (6 of 7)
33+ inch vert (8 of 10)
9’5″+ broad (10 of 11 )
Sub 4.5 short shuttle (5 of 6)
Sub 7 three cone (5 of 6)
Bench: 20+ (7 of 8)

Name/School Height Weight Arm Length 40 Time 10 Split Vertical Broad Jump Short Shuttle Three Cone Bench
Montez Sweat/MSU 6’5/6 260 35 3/4 4.41 1.55 36 10’5″ 4.29 7.00 21

Unfortunately, as is often the case here, only one player checked over box and that was Sweat, one of the freakish workouts we’ve ever seen. With so many prospects opting against the three cone, it cuts down the number of potential options here.

These are the players who missed in just one category.

Jamal Davis/Akron: Bench
Gerri Green/Mississippi St: Three Cone
Justin Hollins/Oregon: Three Cone

Davis missed the bench by literally one rep, Hollins didn’t attempt the three cone, while Winovich fell a couple inches short in the vert. (Ed Note: He also missed in the bench, removing him from this list). Davis is an interesting 6th or 7th round selection.

I added those prospects classified as defensive linemen too. No one hit every mark but a handful came close.

Maxx Crosby/Eastern Michigan: Bench
John Cominsky/Charleston: Three Cone
Rashan Gary/Michigan: Three Cone
Anthony Nelson/Iowa: 40

Crosby missed the bench by two reps, putting up 18 at his Pro Day, while Cominsky fell short in the three cone by .03 seconds. Could Gary be a sleeper if he falls to 20?
