Steelers Film Room: Why Didn’t Antonio Brown Catch That? Part 13

During this dead period of the NFL season I thought it would be fun to look back at the tremendous 2015 season that Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Antonio Brown had as it relates to the targeted passes that he didn’t manage to catch. This series, however, should not be viewed as me nit-picking Brown as instead I hope to show what a reliable pass catcher he is as it relates to catchable and non-catchable balls thrown his direction.

In the Steelers 33-20 win over the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 14, Brown caught another 7 passes from quarterback Ben Roethlisberger for 87 yards. The two, however, failed to connect on three other pass attempts and here are the reasons as to why that was.

On a 2nd and 4 play just inside Bengals territory with just under 3 minutes remaining in the first half, Roethlisberger attempted to hit Brown on this quick slant. While the ball is on target, Brown can’t secure the catch as the ball is knocked out by Bengals cornerback Dre Kirkpatrick.

On the very next play, Roethlisberger again failed to connect with Brown after stepping up into the pocket to avoid the Bengals pass rush. This throw sailed way over Brown’s head and it came close to being intercepted as well.

The third and final misconnect between Brown and Roethlisberger came very late ion the first half. as you can see, the Bengals think Roethlisberger is going to spike the football in order to kill the clock but the steelers quarterback abnd Brown have different plans. Unfortunately, the pass his high and over the head of Brown and Roethlisberger knows it as soon as he lets the football go. The Steelers still managed to get 3-points on this drive just the same.

Ending on a positive note, below is the 26-yard reception that Brown had in this game against the Bengals. As you can see, this really wasn’t by design as there is a lot of ad-libbing here by both Roethlisberger and Brown. The result, however, is all that counts and this time it ended in an explosive play.

Brown exited Week 14 with 100 receptions for 1,397 yards and 7 touchdowns on the season.
