Steelers Practice Squad Safety Da\’mon Cromartie-Smith Currently On Crutches

Mark Kaboly of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports Monday via Twitter that safety Da\’mon Cromartie-Smith, who is currently on the practice squad, was spotted on crutches today. Kaboly adds that the Texas El-Paso product couldn\’t put any weight on his foot.

Depending on the severity of the injury, the Steelers might be forced to make a practice squad move as early as Tuesday. The team is currently carrying 5 safeties on the 53 man roster and that includes Troy Polamalu, who has missed the last two games due to a calf injury.

Cromartie-Smith was originally signed as an undrafted free agent in 2010 and saw limited time on the 53 man roster late last season as a special teams contributor. The Steelers released safety Myron Rolle prior to the start of the season and it is unknown if he will be considered an option should the team decide to replace Cromartie-Smith with another strong safety type. Rolle, however, was unimpressive in limited preseason action and the Steelers could decide to look elsewhere if indeed a move is made at the position.
